Los Flamingos is located within the Benahavís municipality, accessed from the N-340/A-7 coastal road via the Cancelada exit on the western side of the New Golden Mile. From the coast road, the resort entrance is approximately 3 kilometres inland — a straightforward drive through the lower Benahavís valley system. The AP-7 toll motorway provides a faster alternative approach and is the standard route for journeys toward Málaga Airport or Puerto Banús.

Puerto Banús is approximately 12 kilometres east, around 10–16 minutes depending on traffic. Estepona is 14 kilometres west, approximately 14–18 minutes. Marbella town centre is around 20 kilometres, 18–26 minutes. The resort's midpoint position between Marbella and Estepona means it has good access to the amenities of both without being dependent on either. San Pedro de Alcántara — with its full range of everyday services — is equidistant and is the most practical destination for routine shopping and errands.

Málaga Airport is approximately 67 kilometres, around 45 minutes via the AP-7. Gibraltar Airport is 59 kilometres, around 50 minutes. Both are well within range for regular travellers. As with all inland Benahavís addresses, a car is essential for daily life — there is no public transport serving the resort, and the internal road network within the 7-kilometre valley requires driving between different sections.

History

The Los Flamingos estate has its origins in the vision of Ricardo Arranz de Miguel, a Spanish businessman who acquired the land — then known as Los Aralillos — in the Benahavís hills during the 1990s. His concept was ambitious: to create not merely a golf course with surrounding residential development, but a fully formed luxury resort community, anchored by a hotel of genuine architectural and hospitality distinction.

The first golf course, Flamingos Golf, was designed by Antonio García Garrido and opened in 2001 — a par-71 layout with a distinctive Tuscan-inspired character, featuring softly rolling fairways, cypress trees, cork oaks and a large panoramic lake that creates one of the more visually distinctive settings of any golf course on the Costa del Sol. The Anantara Villa Padierna Palace Hotel — then operating under a different brand but with the same architectural ambition — opened in 2003 to considerable acclaim. The second course, Alferini Golf (originally the Gran Flamingo Course), followed in 2006, and the third, Tramores Golf, opened in 2009. By that point, the residential component had developed substantially, with villa plots, standalone villas and apartment complexes distributed across the valley.

The European Senior Tour used the Flamingos Golf course for events in 2002, 2003 and 2004, establishing the resort's professional credentials early in its development. The Ladies European Tour held events here in 2010. Flamingos Golf is the original and most celebrated course on the estate, designed by Antonio García Garrido and opened in 2001. A par-71 layout of considerable quality, it is characterised by a distinctive Tuscan aesthetic — rolling fairways flanked by cypress trees, cork oaks and olive trees, with a large panoramic lake as a central feature. The combination of the Mediterranean vegetation, the sea views from elevated holes and the quality of the playing surface has led to consistent recognition as one of Andalucía's finest courses. It hosted the European Senior Tour in 2002, 2003 and 2004, and the Ladies European Tour in 2010.

Alferini Golf (originally the Gran Flamingo Course, opened 2006) offers a different experience — more undulating terrain, tighter fairways and a greater premium on course management. Its elevated positions provide some of the most dramatic views of any hole on the estate, and the course has a strong following among regular players who want a more demanding test than the Flamingos layout provides.

Tramores Golf, the most recently opened of the three (2009), was designed to complement rather than replicate the existing courses. A par-72 layout, it makes full use of the valley's natural contours and is considered the most playable and forgiving of the three — making it the natural choice for mid-to-high handicap golfers and for visitors playing Los Flamingos for the first time.

Atalaya Colegio Internacional — offering bilingual Spanish-English education from 3 to 18 — is located on the coastal road near Estepona, approximately 15 minutes from the resort and widely considered the most conveniently accessed school for Los Flamingos families. For families specifically seeking the British curriculum, Laude San Pedro International College is approximately 20 minutes. For the IB, Aloha College in Nueva Andalucía is around 30–35 minutes. Sotogrande International School — with its boarding programme — is around 50 minutes but is chosen by some Los Flamingos families whose work or travel schedules make the daily school run challenging.

The school run from Los Flamingos to the most proximate options is manageable and is a familiar part of daily life for the families resident in the resort.
